I was just looking for something interesting for us to do close to home
...um, less than 20miles is plenty close!
Sam was about going out of his MIND while
we walked over to see the real trains!!!
Sam yelling "TRAIN!!!" :) Ya think he was excited?
Amanda wanted to take a pic on the track, isn't she a beauty?! :D
Emily wanted her picture with a train too! What a cutie!
I think Izzy was a little daunted at how HUGE they are!
(Sam called this one Gordon,
he said it was an express...
thank you Thomas the Tank Engine videos! ;)
Sam kept saying "Mommy, I so excited! I love the trains!" :)
The big old engines were so amazing,
and UP donated one to the museum...
makes me homesick for Utah!
Izzy kept freaking out and trying to show Sam
"TRACKS!!!!!"
This is the 'museum' part, all these trains are pretty
much permanent exhibits, with really interesting placques
describing when they were built, when they were active,
what they were used for...etc.
Here Josh is reading about one of them,
it was really cool!
They even have an old Mail Car all set up, like
it used to be, that you can go inside and look around
with a video playing about 'back in the day'.
Here is a better picture of the inside of the Mail Car.
Basically it was a travelling Post Office, really cool to see!
When the train would go through a town but not need to stop
the Postal Worker would use this grabbing stick thingie
to snag the outgoing mail bag, and chuck the incoming
mail bag off the moving train...hee hee, I think it is neato!
Here we are watching the working train (that you can
purchase tickets to ride on) coming back into the 'station'.
Sam was totally freaking out when we first pulled up to the Depot
and he saw this monster train, and went ballistic
when it came thundering into the Depot
honking that LOUD horn! :)
We didn't tell him where we were headed for our little trip,
and the look on his face was SO worth it!
The kids are waiting for the big train to depart.
While we waited for our ride on the BIG train,
they have a free tiny train ride that takes you up
the track to the 'Boneyard' on a tour of the old train cars.
This is an old Boxcar...makes me think of
Fried Green Tomatoes! :D
Izzy didn't really like the ground flashing by
while we were on our tour of the boneyard,
it was just a tiny engine that was not enclosed
at all except for some railings.
FINALLY we got on the BIG train!
Amanda looking out the side.
Emily looking out the side too.
Izzy climbing...honestly it is lucky she didn't
manage to fall overboard! ;)
The kids wanted to ride in the open
car when we first got on.
Sam showing me that he is wearing his
Thomas Tshirt, I actually got it for him
for school this coming school year...
but I thought it was a good choice for his
first real train ride.
"MOM, I SOOOOO EXCITED, I RIDE THE TRAIN!!!"
I LOVE the look of sheer excitement on his face,
this was when the big train started to move.
Being the cool guy that he is,
he then just kicked back and enjoyed the ride!
My peeps.
Everyone watching the scenery flash by,
oh, and they were looking for lizards on the rocks.
Sam was LOVING it!
On the ride back to the Depot we decided to
move to one of the enclosed train cars...
it had A/C...soooo nice!
Sam and Emily watching the desert flash by.
Playing Peek-a-Boo with Izzy.
She was much happier in this train car,
on the open one we pretty much had to
hold her so she didn't manage to fall off the train!
In here she could walk around and we weren't worried.
um...yeah, I don't know what she was doing!
This photo is the PERFECT example of exactly
how Sam felt about riding the trains!
Right now he is hanging over my shoulder looking at these
pics with the same hysterical look of happiness
on his face, talking about when he rode the train.
Excellent little day trip for our family!
Yay me for finding it! ;D
LOL
